Mt. Baldy:

Mt Baldy is the common name for Mt. San Antonio. I have been
hiking in the area for 30 years! About three years ago just after
my daughter was born, we bought a cabin in ice house canyon and have
spent almost every weekend there ever since. The cabin is located
just over a mile up the ice house canyon trail at an elevation of
around 5500 ft. There is no road access so all supplies have to
be packed in over a mile up a trail that gains about 700 feet of
elevation. Not to bad, unless you are trying to move a 225lb wood
stove! Here is a shot looking up ice house canyon toward Ice
House Saddle.
History of Cabin #39:
The cabin was built in 1926 by the Chapman brothers. It was
originally about 200 square feet with a seperate outbuilding that was
another 80 square feet. It was constructed from native stone and
split logs oriented vertically and caulked with cement.
Electricity was installed sometime in the 30's as part of the
rural electrification project. Telephone service was installed in
the late 1940's. The phone system was just upgraded in 2005.
We now have DSL in the canyon! There is something wonderful
about sitting in an idyllic setting working on these webpages.
In the 1960's another 150 square feet was added on giving a more modern
kitchen. The cabin was purchased in 1984 by Chris Reyna. He
did a terrific job of maintaining the cabin. I purchased it from
him in 2003. In 2004 I upgraded the outhouse by replacing the
siding and adding a sink. I replaced the roof on both the main
cabin and outhouse. In 2005 I replaced the 1920s era Ben Franklin stove
with a modern EPA2 woodstove. The cabin used to be VERY smokey
due to cracks in the old stove.
Maps of the Area:
This is a scan of a 25 year old map that gives the names ofthe various
creeks feeding Ice House Canyon. It also shows the old trail that
used to traverse away from the canyon prior to the rerouting in the mid
80s.
There is a geo-cache somewhere in the area.
